Artimus hugged me to his chest, his honeysuckle scent acting as a calming balm to my frazzled nerves.

I let him hold me for a moment because there was no doubt in my mind that if he hadn’t shown up when he had, I’d have literally been fucked.

Sev and I would have fought, of course, but against all those nightmares, stuck in a network of stone corridors with no escape to hand, we would have failed.

I allowed myself to work through the close call, shut it down, and then shoved at Artimus’s chest to let him know I was good.

He released me but used the crook of his finger to force me to look up at him. “Did they hurt you?” His tone was laced with a suppressed emotion I was too frazzled to identify.

“No. Sev protected me.”

“Sev?” His eyes narrowed. “Umbrane’s pet.”

“You know him?”

“I know of him. He’s Umbrane’s favorite toy, or he was. I hear the duke has chosen a new plaything and Sev has been demoted from the position.” A dark look crossed his face.

“What? What are you not telling me?”

“Nothing that you need to worry about. We need to get to the gateway before Umbrane discovers you’re here. I don’t trust what he’ll do.”

We were in a small entranceway with two stools and a table set against the wall. An empty weapons rack was bolted to the wall and an iron door stood ajar behind us.

“How did you find me?”

“One of the spawn alerted Nugen to what had happened. He summoned me because my affiliation to the Court of Shadows allows me access.”

Mallini? Had she called for help? If she did, it meant she hadn’t tried to murder me, unless she hoped I’d be dead by the time they found me.

“I tracked your essence and it led me here.” He took my hand and led me through the iron door into a room filled with sleeping imps.

They lay across tables, hung off stools, sat up against the walls. Some had food dribbling out of their mouths, others clutched tankards of ale that had partially spilled.

Artimus led me across the room. “Hurry, before the effects of the spell wear off.”

“Spell?”

“I have a conji on retainer who provides me with a few minor potions and cantrips. My abyssblood allows me to use them, but they don’t last long.”

I had no idea what a conji was, but I was more than happy to get out of here. We made it past the sleeping imps and through another door that opened onto a starlit courtyard with the view of a field rich with a swaying harvest.

“This way.” Artimus dragged me toward the wall, where an arch of black stone stood starkly against the gray rock.

“Stop!”

“Get them!”

Voices lit up the night behind us.

The gateway began to glow as we approached.

Something whizzed through the air, a sound I recognized. I ducked, yanking on Artimus’s arm to force him to do the same. An arrow buried itself in the stone above the arch with a thunk.
